THP Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Recertification

PALS Re-certification is an advanced course, designed specifically for healthcare providers who will direct or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest, respiratory or shock emergencies in pediatric patients, and who will regularly use PALS skills within their scope of practice.  Learners can expect practice and training in a proven systematic approach to pediatric assessment, treatment algorithms and high-performance teams to improve the quality of care provided to seriously ill or injured children. Participants will practice and demonstrate proficiency in simulated case scenarios and will practice both team leader and team member roles.

COVID Requirements: You will be asked to pass a screening to enter the hospital and to wear a mask while in the hospital and during the class.

Mandatory Pre-course Requirements

You must adequately prepare / complete the following prior to the course:

• Heart and Stroke (HSF) PALS Provider card issued within 24 months of course date (mandatory). You will be required to submit your previous HSF PALS card prior to attending the PALS course. If your previous PALS card is past 24 months from date of issue you will not be allowed to attend the course you have registered for but will have to transfer to the full 2 day PALS Provider course (transfer and course fee difference will apply).
• Heart and Stroke (HSF)BLS Provider Card issued within the previous 12 months (mandatory). We cannot accept BLS cards issued by organizations other than Heart and Stroke. You will be required to submit your HSF BLS card prior to attending the PALS recertification course. If you do not have a HSF BLS card issued within the previous 12 months ( current) you will not be able to attend the course you have registered for.
• Review and understand the information in your PALS Provider Manual and on the Student Website. Pay particular attention to the systematic approach to pediatric assessment, the evaluate-identify-intervene sequence, and the management of respiratory and circulatory abnormalities.
• Complete the Pre-course Self-Assessment on the Student Website (https://resuscitation.heartandstroke.ca). Please note that it is MANDATORY for you to provide your Pre-course Self-Assessment results certificate when you check-in for your course. A passing score of 70% or above is required. You can take the Pre-course Self-Assessment as many times as needed to achieve a passing score. You must the printout of your score with you to the PALS Course. If you arrive for the course without proof of successful completion of the Precourse Self-Assessment, you may not be allowed to participate in the course. • Be familiar with the PALS algorithms and flowcharts so that you can apply them to clinical scenarios. Note that the PALS Course does not present the details of each algorithm.
• Review the Learning Station Competency Checklists in your textbook to gain a clear understanding of how you will be evaluated during the course and the

How to Prepare for Your Course

The PALS Course is designed to teach you the lifesaving skills required to be both a team member and a team leader in either an in-hospital or an out-of-hospital setting. Due to the fact that the PALS Course covers extensive material in a short time, you will need to prepare for the course beforehand.

Course Materials

The PALS Course has been updated to reflect the current Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care. The PALS Provider Manual (2015 edition) is for use by a single student and provides information needed before, during and after class. The new materials (2015 edition) include the following: PALS Provider Manual and a PALS Pocket Reference Card (with PALS algorithms). These are sold as a package as Item #RE6100E.

What This Course Does Not Cover

The PALS Course does not teach CPR, ECG rhythm identification, PALS pharmacology, or algorithms. If you do not learn and understand the ECG and pharmacology information in the Pre-course Self-Assessment, it is unlikely that you can successfully complete the PALS Course. You will not be taught how to read or interpret ECG rhythm strips in the course, nor will you be taught details about PALS pharmacology.
