Event description
TIIEC 2020 Pre-Conference "wisakacihowin (trauma): Exploring the Connection of Spirit in Indigenous Trauma Informed Practices in Education"

About this Event

This pre-conference session will explore the connection of spirit to trauma informed practices within education. The presenters will discuss trauma informed work, what it means to be trauma informed and what it can look like with students or in the classroom. A dialogue deconstructing the term "trauma" within the nehiyaw language will create space to explore wisakacihowin from an Indigenous lens. Amber Dion and Terri Suntjens are trained Social Workers who have years of experience working within First Nation communities in various capacities. Both Amber and Terri now work at MacEwan University with post secondary learners who are navigating their way through western academia. The presenters hope to inspire other educators/social workers/knowledge keepers/practioners to enhance their knowledge regarding wisakacihowin and trauma informed practices.
