About this event

Tool Sharpening 101 covers the safe operation of our slow speed grinder, whet stone, and hand tools to sharpen lathe tools, chisels, cabinet scrapers, and hand plane blades. Members and drop-in members must take this orientation before using any of our sharpening tools.

During the class, students will sharpen a cabinet scraper, and make their own whetstone. Students will take home a cabinet scraper and a DIY whetstone after the class. Although we have lots of tools to practice sharpening on, students have the option of bringing in their own tools to sharpen.

No prior experience is necessary. This orientation is also a perfect precursor to our WoodLab 101, and Lathe 101 classes.

We require that students must bring their own safety glasses or they will be available for purchase at the front desk for $5

Please note, due to COVID-19, the following measures are now in place for this class:

  • It is recommended that everyone sanitize their hands upon entering the building.

Is there an age limit to enter the event?

The minimum age for participants is 13 years old with a participating guardian or 18 otherwise.

What are my parking options at MakerLabs?

MakerLabs' parking lot is located on the east side of the building on the corner of Hawks Avenue and East Cordova Street.

Can I sign up for the member rate?

If you sign up for a membership on the day of the class, you'll receive a refund for the difference between the general and membership class price.

How do I cancel or reschedule my class?

Refunds (minus Eventbrite fees), credits for future classes and orientations, or transferring a ticket to a future date, will only be provided if we are notified by email to at least 24 hours in advance of the class. For cancellation less than 24 hours before the class, we do not provide a refund, but we do offer a 50% credit towards a future class or orientation. No refunds or credits will be provided for no shows. If transferring a ticket to a future class date, students may only transfer their ticket once before forfeiting their original ticket, even if providing more than 24 hours notice.

What happens if I show up late?

Please arrive 15 minutes before the schedule start of the class so that it can start on time. Attendees arriving more than 5 minutes late will not be allowed in the class.
