Toolbox Explore: Baking Arts

About this Event
During this 3 hour virtual baking class students will be creating a winter wonderland gingerbread house! Students will be taught a variety of recipes and techniques including gingerbread dough and assembly, royal icing, sugar sculpting evergreen trees, and piping techniques. No previous experience is needed to partake in the class. At the end of the class you will have an edible winter wonderland landscape.
This workshop will be taught by Amanda Testani.
MATERIALS & EQUIPMENT
Eligible youth will receive a materials kit in advance of the workshop, which will be delivered to those in the Scarborough area. For this workshop participants will also need access to:
- oven
- rolling pin
- wooden spoon or rubber spatula
- large dinner plate
- cookie sheet
- parchment paper (optional)
- 2 medium mixing bowls
- small sewing scissors
- utensil spoon

ABOUT TOOLBOX EXPLORE
Toolbox Explore is a virtual project-based workshop series. Each workshop will feature an introduction to a unique skill set or specialty, accompanied by a related project. The workshops are created and led by women and non-binary instructors with experience in the field. These skill-sharing workshops are an opportunity for youth to network and get to know first-hand what it’s like working in a variety of trades. Materials will be provided in advance to registered participants who fit Toolbox's eligibility criteria.
ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION
Explore sessions are open to both those who qualify for Toolbox programming and the general public. If you fit the eligibility criteria, and are located in Scarborough, a material kit will be provided for you.
If you do not fit the eligibility for a Toolbox participant, you are still welcome to join our online workshop. If you would like to receive a materials kit you can purchase one at cost to be picked up in the Toronto area.
You’re eligible for Toolbox programming if you are aged 14-18 and are either:
- Coming from a low income household
- Woman Identifying
- Gender nonconforming
- Transgender
- Two-spirit
- Indigenous
- Black, Afro-diasporic, Afro-Caribbean, and/or Afro latinx
- LGBTQIA+
- A person of colour
ABOUT AMANDA TESTANI
Amanda is a pastry chef and confectionery artist. She graduated from the Baking and Pastry program at George Brown College. From there Amanda worked at Bobbette and Belle patisserie as a baker, then head cake decorator, and then to managing both their Toronto kitchens. For 13 years she's been creating cakes for weddings and special events for numerous film and television productions including Chopped and the Marilyn Denis Show and for musicians including Drake and MotleyCrue. When she's not creating treats for her customers she's teaching pastry classes to both youth and adults at Le Dolci Culinary studio @ledolci . You can find her treats on @mooncakecon
