About this event

The winner of the 2022 Toronto Book Awards will be announced at the annual event at the Toronto Reference Library. Hosted by CBC Metro Morning's Ismaila Alfa.

The City of Toronto and Toronto Public Library have named the five 2022 Toronto Book Awards shortlisted titles. This year's shortlisted authors reflect the diversity and depth of Toronto's literary talent and their stories – inspired by the city – will leave an indelible impression on readers.

The titles selected for the 2022 short list are:

The Relatives by Camilla Gibb (Double Day)

Two Indians by Falen Johnson (J. Gordon Shillingford Publishing)

Wrong Side of the Court by HN Khan (PRH Canada Young Readers)

Run Towards the Danger by Sarah Polley (Penguin Random House)

The Underground Railroad, Next Stop by Adrienne Shadd, Afua Cooper, Karolyn Smardz Frost (Dundurn)

This is the 48th year of the Toronto Book Awards. Established by Toronto City Council in 1974, the awards honour books of literary merit that are evocative of Toronto. The annual awards offer $15,000 in prize money. Each shortlisted finalist will receive $1,000, with $10,000 going to the winner. This year's Toronto Book Awards Committee is comprised of volunteer members Ann Y.K. Choi, Margaret Henry, Khashayar “Kess” Mohammadi, Phillip Dwight Morgan and Brenda Wastasecoot.

Note: This is an in-person event at The Bram and Bluma Appel Salon, the premiere event space for Toronto Public Library’s cultural and heritage programming located on the second floor of the Toronto Reference Library (789 Yonge Street).

Arrive early, meet people. The talk starts at 7 pm, but doors open at 6 pm. Come early so you can chat with your fellow literature lovers, and make new friends. As with all Appel Salon events, we'll have a cash bar with a selection of beer, wine, and liquor, as well as sandwiches and snacks.

Please don't print your tickets. We'll either scan your ticket on your smartphone or quickly find your name on our tablets and check you in.

This event will not be live streamed but the replay will be made available to watch on TPL’s YouTube channel.
