Event description

Description

Heather Crochetiere is a Freshwater Specialist at WWF-Canada where she leads WWF’s efforts to safeguard Canada’s Wild Rivers, the Loblaw Water Fund, and work on the intersection of water and energy. Working with diverse stakeholders on a wide range of initiatives, her efforts contribute to getting all of Canada’s waters in good condition, as determined by WWF-Canada’s Watershed Reports. She is working to keep Canada’s ten longest wild rivers wild by collaborating with local Indigenous communities and facilitating requested training opportunities and capacity building. Another project, the Loblaw Water Fund, enables community-based organizations efforts to tackle the restoration and monitoring needs of watersheds all across Canada, especially in those regions that need it most as identified by the Watershed Reports. She is leading WWF-Canada’s engagement with the federal government around the Fisheries Act and the Canadian Navigable Waters Act, working to ensure that Canada’s environmental legislation adequately protects our freshwater. Finally, she is working to understand the water-energy nexus in Canada, in particular around hydro power, to determine how we can better treat water and energy in a holistic way.

Heather has been with WWF-Canada since 2012. Past work includes playing a key role in the technical analysis and outreach efforts for the Watershed Reports, released in 2017.

Heather has a Master of Environmental Science from the University of Waterloo where she studied the efficacy of voluntary programs to reduce invasive horticultural plant species introductions. This research was inspired by her work as a field botanist for the Royal Botanical Gardens in Hamilton, ON. Heather also has a BSc Biology, with a specialization in biodiversity, and a minor in geographic information systems from McMaster University.
