Event description

Description

Most of us know that it’s possible to do death better. Maybe you feel a calling to support dying people and their families, but aren’t sure where to start. If so, this is the place for you.

Or maybe you’re already working somewhere in the field of death and dying, and are trying to do it better on your own. If you’d like to meet with other innovative practitioners, this is also the place for you.

The Toronto Death & Dying Network brings together people—death doulas, healthcare practitioners in hospice palliative care, funeral directors, professionals in their own niche of death and dying, and ordinary people just interested in learning about what’s out there before they need it—for support, learning, and networking.

This month, Linda Hochstetler will be leading a discussion on MAiD (Medical Assistance in Dying). Since June 17, 2016, it has been legal in Canada to ask a doctor to speed up the dying process by administering a pair of drugs to end one's life. This intervention brings up strong emotions in healthcare professionals and for dying persons and their families. An honest discussion begins by understanding what the legislation allows and what it does not allow. Linda, a registered social worker at a local hospice, is experienced in naviagting these MAiD discussion with families, and will help you understand this new legislation and answer questions about the MAiD process.

Note: The TDDN does not take a stand on the MAiD intervention, but encourages public discussions on all matters relating to end of life issues.

We will meet Thursday, September 14, 6:30-7:30 pm at the Village Healing Centre, 240 Roncesvalles Avenue, Toronto, ON M6R 1L3. The VHC is located midway between Howard Park Avenue and Queen Street, just north of the Public Library. There are a small number of free parking spaces in the parking lot for general VHC attendees. There is also lots of pay parking on Roncy, or free parking on the side streets just off Roncy running east/west. If you're coming by TTC, there is a streetcar stop right out front on the King streetcar.

We will be meeting in "the middle room", as it's called, on the main floor. This is the room opposite the Yoga Village studio just inside the building. Look for signs. From the parking lot, it's easiest to find it coming in the door on the left that looks like you're entering the church, not the VHC. (Hopefully you found the room the first or second week and are getting the hang of it by now.)

There is a fee to attend the gathering to cover rental and promotion costs. Early Bird tickets can be purchased for $10 through Eventbrite to ensure a space for yourself and help with planning, and are available now. Tickets at the door cost $15 and can be paid for in cash only. For questions or to RSVP by email, contact Linda Hochstetler, host and organizer, at lindafhochstetler@gmail.com.

Looking forward to having you join us!
