TPFF Presents: Samar Hejazi, An Unravelling - An Art Exhibition

TPFF presents two large-scale hanging fabric installations by artist Samar Hejazi. In her exhibition An Unravelling she looks at how traditional Palestinian embroidery can be a host to thinking about craft’s ability to transform into a symbol of identity. Hejazi’s work also pushes these traditional craft making methods by rebelling against the fundamental techniques and materials that have served as the foundation for Palestinian embroidery for thousands of years, and in turn destabilizes the dialogue around what being Palestinian can encompass.

Samar Hejazi is a Toronto-based multi-disciplinary artist who mingles her technical background in architecture, graphic design, and new media art, with the cultural variety and expanse of her upbringing. As a trilingual woman who grew up in extremely diverse communities in the Middle East and North America, Samar has used her art to question conceptual ideas of identity, culture, tradition, home, and humanness, and to make visible her own personal struggles, growth and explorations within them.

Since graduating with a BFA in new media from Ryerson University in Toronto, she has attended Arquetopia instructional residencies in Oaxaca, Mexico and Cusco, Peru. She also attended the Takt Art Residency in Berlin in 2016 and completed a studio residency at the Toronto Museum Of Contemporary Art in 2019, which concluded in a group show. Most recently Samar was invited to take part in the international mentorship program at the Arquetopia Foundation. Samar has exhibited nationally and internationally at the Possum Gallery in Berlin and Decentered Gallery in Puebla, Mexico.
