Description

The Centre for International Governance Innovation is pleased to organize a high-level public panel and discussion on the topic of “Trade and Climate Change: Synergies and Conflicts.”

It has already been two years since the successful conclusion of COP21 with the signature of the Paris Agreement. All WTO Member States have signed and most have ratified the Agreement. The links between climate measures and trade rules continue to be debated with little agreement as to whether the relationship between the two is largely mutually supportive or whether in fact trade rules pose barriers to climate measures.

Please join us for a panel and discussion featuring prominent experts in the field of Trade and Climate Change, including:

James Bacchus, Senior Fellow with the International Law Research Program (CIGI), Senior Counsellor at the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) and Distinguished University Professor of Global Affairs and Director of the Center for Global Economic and Environmental Opportunity at the University of Central Florida;

Steve Charnovitz, Professor of law at The George Washington University Law School;

Thomas Cottier, CIGI Visiting Professor at University of Ottawa Faculty of Law, former Managing Director of the World Trade Institute, Professor Emeritus of European and International Economic Law at the University of Bern;

Silvia Maciunas, Deputy Director, International Environmental Law, International Law Research Program, CIGI;

Maria Panezi, Research Fellow, International Law Research Program, CIGI.

The panel and public discussion will be moderated by Oonagh Fitzgerald, Director of the International Law Research Program, CIGI.

A reception will follow the public discussion.
