Event description
Training for wildfire & emergency response staff or planners on how farm & ranch operations are impacted by, and can prepare for, wildfire.

About this Event

This training, designed for emergency response staff, fire staff, planners and others working in wildfire management, will provide in-depth knowledge on how farm and ranches are impacted by wildfire, and how to prepare these operations.

Workshop Objectives

  • Train individuals who can support agricultural operations with wildfire preparedness
  • Familiarize trainees with the distinct/specific considerations that agricultural operators have when preparing for - and responding to – wildfire
  • Facilitate an increase in one-on-one support for agricultural operations with completing and implementing their wildfire plans

Workshop Format

The morning will provide an overview of the key content in the Farm & Ranch Wildfire Plan Guide and Workbook, including:

  • Operational maps for planning and communicating
  • Equipment lists (for response)
  • Water sources (for on-farm needs, wildfire response)
  • Livestock protection planning
  • Employee and visitor evacuation planning (important for operations with multiple properties, foreign workers, agri-tourism)
  • Risk reduction on agricultural properties (any distinct considerations supplementary/additional to typical FireSmart scenarios)

The afternoon will focus on case studies of 2-3 distinct agricultural operations with specific planning considerations to increase understanding of the types of issues faced by producers during wildfire, and how preparedness can reduce risk.

Participant Requirements

This workshop is ideal for wildland fire management agency staff, municipal fire department staff, emergency management staff, rural or urban planners and managers, and Wildland Urban Interface specialists . Participants must have a baseline level of knowledge and training regarding wildfire (e.g. FireSmart 101).
