Event description

Description

Woman Suffrage Memorabilia, a historical preservation of (white) woman's suffrage campaigning at the turn of the 20th century, documents a small selection of the anti-suffragist postcards--the iconic medium of choice, akin to today's internet--that were used to discredit campaigners at the time. In these postcards, the arguments of the white suffragists were seldom, if ever, actually mentioned. Instead, the suffragists themselves were depicted as boorish, manly, at times even borderline demonic. The message was clear: Suffragists, in shirking their “duty” to profess a sanitized, 20th century expectation of their gender, were unworthy of being listened to on this basis alone.

Imagine the surprise of trans feminists aware of this history when we see the practice revived against us, by other feminists.

Join Ellie, a science communications journalist, as she covers a brief history of 20th century sexism and how its themes have been revived in modern transmisogyny, even in feminist discourse.

Side Effects may include migraines, desk-smashing, etc.
