Event description

Description

In Ontario, a staggering 20 percent of transgender people experience some form of discrimination and abuse, 45 percent have attempted suicide, while a staggering 77 percent seriously considered it. Personal safety, something taken for granted by most of us, is a constant fear for many trans and gender non-conforming people. Many public institutions are now LGBTQ friendly, but we are failing LGBTQ seniors. Seniors facilities remain some of the least hospitable spaces.

While the federal government has introduced Bill C-16 to protect trans people under the Canadian Human Rights Act, and hate speech provisions in the Criminal Code, it remains stalled in the senate yet again.

Join Andrea Houston, a prominent LGBTQ rights activist, Queer Media instructor at Ryerson University, and managing editor of Torontoist, and Shoshana Pellman, a prominent seniors Trans Rights advocate, on a discussion about how we can make all institutions safer for the Trans community.

We will be at the Madison Avenu Pub on June 19. Doors open at 7:00pm. Discussion starts promptly at 7:30pm.

As always, the events are free, you only have to pay for what you order. Please RSVP to let us know you can join us.
