MYTHS, LIES AND THE IRISH LANGUAGE
When it comes to discussing the Irish state’s policy towards the Irish language, everyone is an expert. Unfortunately, many of the facts and figures bandied around about An Ghaeilge are either based on misunderstandings, or outright lies.
Caoimhín De Barra is assistant professor of Irish History and Culture at Drew University. He received his doctoral degree from the University of Delaware in 2014. His research interests focus on the development of national identities in Ireland and Britain in the nineteenth and twentieth century.
The Transatlantic Connections Conference will open on Wednesday January 11th at 7pm, beginning a four-day program of panels, lectures, keynote talks and cultural events by guest speakers from home and abroad.Panels continue on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Lunchtime lectures with guest speakers take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with Keynote Lectures each of the evenings. There is also an Arts Program, including Arts Corner talks, Art Exhibitions and live music each evening.
Conference panels, lectures, arts and events are all open to the public and free of charge.
