Event description
As the diversity in our church continues to grow, we are seeking to make it a safer place for all who choose to come.

About this Event

As the diversity in our church continues to grow, we are seeking to make it a safer place for all who choose to come. One of the ways that we do that is by taking opportunities to educate ourselves and increase our vocabulary.

For many, transgender issues within church life are new territory. Concepts related to gender diversity may feel overwhelming or confusing. The presenter, Kai Scott, brings an open and friendly approach to provide a session that is highly interactive and engaging. In particular, through evocative icebreakers at the beginning of the session, the attendees will deepen their understanding of gender as a way to make it more tangible and accessible.

Participants will be introduced to language and concepts related to gender diversity as well as insights into the unique and often invisible challenges and barriers faced by transgender people. The presentation will provide insightful statistics for additional context and understanding. The session also delves into how to respectfully interact with trans people, including what to do, what to avoid, how misgendering happens and how to acknowledge it, how to obtain pronouns, singular use of “they/them,” and gender inclusive language and practices. Finally, the session will allow attendees to apply language and concepts to common scenarios involving trans people as a way to navigate challenging and complex issues.
