Event description
A workshop focused on prehospital trauma care for paramedics working in rural, austere and other low-resource settings.

About this event

Facilitated and offered by Six Nations Paramedic Service and the Centre for Paramedic Education and Research.

8 continuing education credits available for paramedics.

Working environments for both urban and rural paramedics can be diverse and unexpected with both physical and mental challenges. Paramedic education primarily focuses on clinical care within an ambulance or a “scene” in close proximity of the ambulance. However, it is not uncommon that paramedics particularly in remote areas are required to respond to medical and traumatic emergencies “beyond the tarmac”. Examples could include an accident at a hunting camp, an ATV roll-over in the bush, farm equipment mishaps, or a boating collision among many other examples.

Trauma in the Bush is a 1-day workshop using problem-based learning and peer education to help expand paramedics' practical and academic knowledge to operate in settings where trauma care may be affected or hindered due to environment, weather, terrain, or prolonged extrication/evacuation.

Primary topics include:

• Point of care ultrasound for prehospital trauma assessment

• Spinal assessment and exam. Successfully managing a spine injury in austere settings.

• Risk vs benefit – balancing what interventions might create more risk for a patient in remote and rural settings

• Back 40 pharmacology – the effects of medications on trauma patients in prolonged prehospital transports and other remote settings

• Evacuation and extrication – methods for safely extricating a patient from the bush to tarmac

This program is field-based. Expect to spend time outside in any weather condition.
