Description

A day-long symposium for journalism students and working journalists to acquire new skills to cover traumatic incidents and report on people who have experienced trauma.

Sessions include:

  • Trauma 101: What every journalist must know about trauma

  • Trauma Talkback: Hear from trauma survivors Catherine Cameron, David Gibson and Laura Jackson about the good, bad and ugly of media coverage — and what journalists can learn from it

  • When trauma follows you home: Journalists Cliff Lonsdale, Curt Petrovich and Joanna Smith shed light on the other side of covering traumatic incidents

  • Self-Care for Journalists: How to build self-care into your journalistic practice to create a career that is sustaining — and sustainable, with Amanda Carver, registered psychotherapist
