Description

The purpose of the workshop is to build trauma awareness by reviewing common definitions, types, and impacts of trauma as well as exploring research. The workshop will explore the key principles of trauma informed care and how they can be applied to generalist social work settings. The sessions will also review how social workers are impacted by trauma and how to mitigate the effects of working in trauma exposed environments.

Workshop Objectives

  • Increase trauma awareness (definitions, types, impacts, prevalence, neurobiology of trauma, ACES research)
  • Understand the key principles of trauma informed care and how to apply them to generalist social work settings
  • Review how trauma informed practice intersects with social work
  • Review how social work practice is impacted by trauma work (burn out, compassion fatigue, moral distress, and vicarious trauma).
  • Learn about how to mitigate working in trauma exposed environments

Presenter

Tonya Grant MSW, RSW has over 25 years of experience working in collaboration with children, youth, adults and families from diverse backgrounds. Tonya worked for almost a decade in the child welfare system before graduating with her Masters from the Dalhousie School of Social Work. As a clinical social worker, Tonya has worked in the areas of community mental health & addictions, children’s inpatient mental health, complex case, social work leadership and social work education. Tonya uses strength based critical social work approaches and she is trained in solution focused therapy, family systems therapy, acceptance & commitment therapy and trauma informed practice to help people better understand their experiences, relationships and environments.
