Phoenix Art Workshop's "Travellingbrush.com" presents: the 2nd annual Grand Prix of Art – Delta in the Historic Village of Ladner on July 17, 2016.
Grand Prix of Art Delta, BC Delta’s little gem, Ladner, sits quietly tucked off the south arm of the Fraser River only 20 minutes from Vancouver. First settled in 1873, the historic Village of Ladner was once a place for farmers and fishermen to ship produce to urban markets. Many parts of the waterfront remain untouched and undeveloped, which lends itself as the perfect spot for artists to capture the character of one of the lower mainland’s most charming hidden secrets.
On race day, artists are asked to report to the registration table at Ladner Community Centre by 9 am; here they are assigned a painting location by random lottery and dispatched for the start of the competition at 10am. This plein air painting race has artists racing against the clock, completing their work on location within the 3 hour time limit. The race ends at 1 pm when artists are asked to return to the Ladner Community Centre and prepare their paintings for display and adjudication. The works must be submitted in display condition, titled and priced, for sale, no later than one hour after completion. After artists submit their painting they are asked to join our event picnic and award ceremony. Immediatly following our awards the works of art will be made available for sale to the public, with 20% of the proceeds going to Delta’s Non-Profit Arts Society, Artists in the Village. Viewers will also have a vote, with an opportunity to cast a ballot for the “People’s Choice Award”.
When & Where
In 2005 Phoenix Art Workshop organized and led our first international artist excursion to Cuba. We created this site to chart all our adventures; past trips like Guatemala, China, Italy, Bali, and Colombia, as well as our upcoming trips to Vietnam and Cambodia, France and other exotic locations in Central and South America. Established in 1997, the Phoenix Art Workshop is a privately-run visual arts centre emphasizing visual literacy, design, individual creativity. A community-based resource for art supplies, custom framing, and education, Phoenix Art Workshop has always encouraged artists to work creatively from life and plein air by hosting our international tours and organizing events like our 24 Hour Life Drawing Marathons, Culture Days, The 100 Day Challenge, and our Grand Prix of Art.
Our International tours have become a huge component of our identity here at Phoenix Art Workshop, both here in Canada and the many international locations we have visited over the last 12 years. Challenging ourselves to observe, absorb and record these experiences while we take the slow travel road, (rather than rushing from location to location to check our bucket list) is without doubt, the most rewarding way to discover the world. Join us on an upcoming trip and be prepared to discover for yourself the art of travel.
