Insomnia is the # 1 sleep disorder worldwide. This 3-hour workshop will provide you with guidance in how to treat insomnia utilizing EMDR. AIP and the Standard EMDR Protocol inform the basis of treatment. Included will be common negative and positive insomnia cognitions. This presentation will familiarize you with the widespread insomnia problem and its destructive consequences for your clients and society. In addition you will learn 12 positive sleep hygiene behaviors that promote restorative sleep. You will discover how to join EMDR with stimulus control and sleep restriction to help your clients reach stable recovery from insomnia.

Learning ObjectivesParticipants will be able to:

  • Name at least 2 medical or behavioral problems linked to insomnia sleep depravation.
  • Identify a minimum of 3 common negative sleep cognitions and 3 sleep promoting positive sleep cognitions.
  • Create an insomnia treatment plan using the standard EMDR protocol.
  • Identify and employ at least 3 positive sleep hygiene behaviors.

Program Timeline and Content

8am – 8:55am: Introducing Dr. Marcus. Identifying and elaborating on the worldwide insomnia problem. Discover how treating secondary insomnia creates substantial benefits for your clients overall health. Review of research suggesting links between insomnia sleep depravation and cardiovascular disease, dementia, diabetes reduced life span, obesity and motor vehicle accidents. Classify sleep medications. Review medication utilization patterns and medication side effects. Compare medication treatment with psychotherapy for treatment of insomnia. Review stages of sleep and how they change during the life cycle. Behavioral recommendations for insomnia: Learn to utilize positive sleep hygiene to help your clients pave the way for better sleep. How to utilize sleep restriction and stimulus control to prepare for EMDR.

8:55am -9:30am: Practicum # 1 Power of Wake-Up time, Sleep Hygiene, Utilizing Stimulus Control and Sleep Restriction.

9:30am - 9:40 am: Break

9:40am – 10:10 am: How to use EMDR for insomnia treatment: Indications and contra indications. The key to EMDR insomnia treatment – specifying the targets. Using Floatback and Affect Bridge for insomnia treatment. Common negative cognitions for insomnia. How to reverse engineer your client’s negative cognitions to refine EMDR insomnia targets. Review how AIP guides your EMDR insomnia treatment.

10:10am – 10:45am: Practicum # 2 EMDR Protocol for Insomnia: NC, PC, AIP. Focus on Phases # 1 & # 2 of EMDR Therapy.

10:45am – 11:00am: Mental disengagement for sleep maintenance insomnia. More Sleep Hygiene. Promote stable insomnia recovery

About the Presenter:

Dr. Marcus holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. He is a Licensed Psychologist in the State of California. Dr. Marcus has designed programs for Panic, Phobia, PTSD, Trauma, Depression, Occupational problems, Stress Reduction, Self Esteem, Couples, Alcohol and Drug problems and Headache Relief. He has extensive experience with CBT and EMDR. Dr. Marcus is an EMDR Approved Consultant and he has published research on PTSD and Migraine Headaches.
