Description

REEP HOUSE Series

On a weekend in the summer, Victoria Park is abuzz with activity from festivals, weddings, children playing, and people lounging under trees. Throughout its history, the park has been a central gathering spot for people in the community. In many ways, the story of the trees around Victoria Park is the story of Kitchener.

Take a walk into Victoria Park to explore the trees that are central to our urban forest. As the city’s oldest neighbourhood has evolved over time, the trees that live and grow in it are intimately connected to its history and the continued good health of its residents. David Schmitt will lead a walk from Reep House into the park to draw the connection between the many benefits that our urban trees provide, the challenges they face, and the ways that we can help look after our leafy friends.

David Schmitt’s passion for trees comes, in part, from growing up beside Breithaupt Park one of Kitchener’s oldest natural areas.

His education includes a Master’s degree in Planning, an Honour’s Bachelor of Environmental Studies in Geography, and a Forest Technician diploma. He is also a graduate of the Municipal Forestry Institute program.

He has more than 25 years of urban forestry experience working at the City of Kitchener where he implemented new tree protection standards for city road reconstruction projects, carried out the first street tree and natural area inventories, developed Kitchener’s Natural Areas Program, and led the monitoring and action plan for Emerald Ash Borer. Today, he advocates the critical role soils play in tree health, and is the project lead for Kitchener’s first sustainable urban forest strategy.
