Event Details

Conceptual art from Tokyo, both a dance party and punk rock show at the same time. They recently sold out seven shows in New York and were invited to open for DEVO on an east coast tour. PHARRELL WILLIAMS (N.E.R.D.) is a big fan and looking to collaborate with them later this year. They’re also coming off two successful European tours in 2011, including shows at Lowlands Festival (NL) and Summer Sonic (JP), and a support for DIE ANTWOORD.

This is the underground party icon’s Vancouver debut. With an explosive sound, the 6-piece performance art powerhouse was described by The New Yorker as “overcaffeinated electronic art rock.” Their live performances were described by The Guardian as ferociously fast and furious,” while Hearty Magazine reported that “there’s a Godzilla tearing through Tokyo’s music scene” while MTV Iggy described the group’s performance as “art you can sweat to.” Pharrell Williams described them as “full of energy…got the crowd going crazy...amazing, I’m working with them, that was awesome.”

Basketball are creating a majestic and monumental communal spirit through their music. Traditional middle eastern strumming saddled upon gaping bass reverberates through the caves that permeate dances of new and old histories. They ride atop chrome camels across pixalated deserts to set up their dance tent. Their cargo: drum machines, a constellation of percussion, the turkish zurna, the persian santur, electric guitar, sub upon sub, and voice upon voice. Their live performances, like rituals, induce mass dancing through catharsis, roping bodies into possession with their fierce thumping beats, and sparkling with eastern melodies.

Andy Dixon (SECRET MOMMY, CAVING) is a multidisciplinary  artist who works in visual art, design, and sound & music. His music is an experimental take on dance floor bangers; big beats, synths, and unlikely samples. " artist who is constantly challenging his media." - The Pop Aesthetic

Sascha Yamashita, aka the sly virus, hails from Vancouver, BC and has been Dj’ing since 2004. Starting his DJ’ing career spinning original 80’s music on 12” maxi-singles, the sly virus would recreate the atmosphere of the decade’s glory days. He later advanced into house music and currently his natural progression has lead him into the Indie Dance & Nu Disco genres and the rising Belgium indie dance/nu disco scene. Getting involved in the late 90’s electronic music scene as a special events promoter, Sascha has helped run cultural spaces including Gallery Atsui. Frustrated with how closed the art world can be, Sascha and mates turned an old restaurant / casino into a platform to showcase the art they want.  With a progressively conceptual vision and a dedication to emerging artists, Atsui stayed unique in a sea of cookie-cutter perspectives. Sascha is now onto new projects!
