True North Rising
Event Information
About this event
Our guest will be His Excellency, Whit Fraser.
His Excellency Whit Fraser has witnessed the Canadian Arctic as few others have. As a reporter beginning with the CBC in Frobisher Bay, now Iqaluit, in 1967, he has travelled to every community in Canada’s three Territories and beyond. For over fifty years, Fraser maintained that the best story in Canada is the remarkable battle in Canada‘s north by Indigenous people as they reclaimed their land rights, their commitment to protect their languages and cultures, and the ongoing struggle for self-preservation and self-government. His lifelong association and commitment to Arctic issues and peoples, continued as founding Chairman of the Canadian Polar Commission and later Executive Director of, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, the national organization representing Canadian Inuit. His memoir, True North Rising, documents those experiences and his relationship with remarkable Indigenous leaders. Among those leaders is Mary Simon, Canada’s Governor General and Fraser's wife and partner for 30 years.
His talk will be Wednesday, December 1st at 6:30 pm, via a virtual webinar.
