Description
The climate crisis — and its associated environmental, social and economic ramifications — is among the most pressing issues of our time. The design, construction, and operation of our built environment accounts for nearly 40% of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions, and while the effects of the climate crisis affect every community, they are having a disproportionate effect on already marginalized groups furthering issues of social equity.
As shapers of the build environment and active participants in the construction industry, architects must acknowledge our collective responsibility to not only respond but act during this climate emergency — but what are the concrete actions we must take to do this promptly and effectively? What fundamental challenges and strategies must we engage with if we are to respond to this call to action?
Join us on this forum as we bring together some of Toronto’s most compelling thinkers on sustainable design, a voice from Toronto’s development community, and the architectural profession to discuss the fundamental shifts we must undertake, and innovative solutions we might employ, to decisively further sustainability within the design and construction industry. Moderated by members of the TSA Executive, this forum seeks to prompt architects, designers and the construction industry to engage in a lively conversation and work collectively to identify tools, strategies and resources to formulate an action plan that will allow our members, practices and Society to effectively address this emergency.
Speakers:
- Dr. Ted Kesik, BASc (Ottawa), MASc, PhD (Toronto) | Professor of Building Science, Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design, University of Toronto

DesignTO, formerly the Toronto Design Offsite Festival, is Canada’s largest cultural celebration of design with over 100 exhibitions and events forming Toronto’s design week, January 17–26, 2020.
Going into its 10th year, the Festival transforms Toronto into a hub for creativity, taking art and design out of the studio and into the urban sphere. About the organizer
Established in 1887, the Toronto Society of Architects (TSA) is a non-profit volunteer-led organization dedicated to bringing people together to discuss, learn and explore around our shared passion for the built environment. We are committed to the betterment of our city and have played an important advocacy role throughout Toronto’s history. We do this through a wide range of programs which foster welcoming and inclusive forums for debate and the exchange of ideas, stimulating critical thinking about the design and building issues of our time.
