About this Event

Interested in learning about how scientists and policymakers communicate? Join the Toronto Science Policy Network for our next TSPN Talks with Dr. Julie Marentette, Senior Science Advisor at Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Dr. Marentette will discuss navigating science-policy interfaces, and her experience as a scientist and science advisor for the federal government. There will be an opportunity to ask Dr. Marentette questions at the end of her talk.

Everyone is welcome to attend — regardless of whether you are currently a student, working, or anywhere in between.

About Dr Julie Marentette:

Julie is a Senior Science Advisor with the Fish Population Science branch of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Her work focuses on science advice for Canadian major fish stocks, and in providing scientific support for national fisheries policy and management decision-making. Julie’s interests lie broadly in risk assessment, decision-making in resource management, and science communication. She obtained a BSc in Biology from the University of Windsor, and a PhD in Psychology, Neuroscience and Behaviour from McMaster University, studying an invasive fish in the Canadian Great Lakes. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Environment Canada on the developmental toxicology of native fish species in the Alberta oil sands region, then spent several years in the Northwest Territories as a regulator for impacts to fish and fish habitat in Arctic mining, oil and gas sectors, before returning to science in Ottawa, Ontario.

About the Toronto Science Policy Network:

The Toronto Science Policy Network is a student-run science policy group which provides a platform to learn more about and engage in science policy. Since July 2018, we have organized a variety of events (including workshops, public panels and talks) and advocacy efforts, engaging over 300 individuals to date. While we are a recognized campus group at the University of Toronto, we welcome members outside the university to join. Everyone is welcome, regardless of whether you study or actively work in the sciences, social sciences, or humanities.
