TUC-Bow River Chapter Bow River Brown Trout Redd Survey Nov 12, 2016
Sat, 12 November 2016, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM MST
The Bow River Chapter of Trout Unlimited Canada is looking for volunteers to help us conduct our second annual redd surveys on the Bow River! Redd’s are the gravel nests that brown trout make and then spawn on top of. Brown trout spawn in these redds in the fall and then the eggs incubate for multiple months until they hatch. Redd sites are extremely sensitive areas and redd surveys allow for the observation and enumeration of redds without causing harm or damaging redds. Surveys will be conducted on November 12 and 13 (Saturday and Sunday). Due to the size of the boats, only 15 volunteers can join us per day so sign up early!
What will redd surveys entail?
Volunteers will float the Bow River using inflatable rafts observing and counting redds as they travel downstream. During a brief workshop in the morning and throughout the day volunteers will learn about brown trout biology, redds and survey techniques. Volunteers will be required to paddle and assist in maneuvering the raft. PFD's and paddles will be provided for every volunteer.
What to bring?
-Waders and boots
-Toques and gloves
-Layers of clothing, appropriate to the weather
-Bag or backpack, preferably dry bag but not necessary
-Lunch (Hot beverages and snacks will be available in the morning)
Where to meet?
On Saturday November 12 please meet at 9AM at the Fish Creek Boat Launch which is located at the south end of Bow Bottom Trail in Fish Creek Provincial Park. Plan to return to the boat launch between 4PM and 5PM.
