Meeting Schedule:

February 21 - 1.30-3pm Facilitated by Bianca Sinclair and Calgary Distress Centre - guest co-facilitator

Being unemployed is difficult and it can be hard to know what services are available to help. It is even more challenging because when finances are tight many services have fees to access them. Distress Centre Calgary provides free and confidential support over the phone, online, and in person with counsellors. Distress Centre also operates 2-1-1 in the City of Calgary which is an additional free service that can connect you with other community supports. For this session, Matthew Wengrowich MSW, RSW from the Distress Centre will be exploring how you can access these supports and answering any questions related to free/low cost psychological supports in Calgary.”

(no meeting February 28)

March 7 - 1.30pm-3pm Facilitated by Bianca Sinclair and Gail Kastning Portfolio Careers

A portfolio careerist is someone who feels more secure generating income from a variety of sources rather than relying on one full-time job. This workshop will examine the concept of portfolio careers, the pros and cons, and the benefits of this style of work in a global economy and recession. It will provide examples of individuals and families who have created portfolio careers that generate income from various sources. If you are interested in designing a portfolio approach to work, this workshop will help you:

  • Reinvent the concept of career direction and work life.
  • Identify the advantages and disadvantages of this style of work.
  • Learn how to market a portfolio career with focus and purpose.

This workshop will get you thinking outside of the box and challenge you to redefine your work life.

Laid Off Calgary meetings provide connection, support and empowerment during these economically challenged times. The ask of you is that you register in advance (here in eventbrite) and note that in the Laid Off Calgary meetings we respect confidentiality and time of each other, we are non-judgemental, we listen, and we share from our own experiences.

** Please note: the meeting starts on the advertised time, if you may be running more than 5 minutes late or may not be able to attend, please contact me in advance so we can reschedule you for another meeting **

The group meeting is 90 minutes. These meetings are open to first-timers and regulars.

We start by establishing some ground rules for the discussion then the facilitators invite conversation. There is a psychoeducational component (e.g. positive thinking strategies, learning about the stress response, finding resilience, grief process) with a key takeaway each week. With peer support participants can learn from others facing similar issues, feel more connected to others, pick up interpersonal skills and internalize lessons.

The facilitator ensures those who wish to talk can have a chance to share, or simply listen and hold space for others.

On some meetings we have special guests/industry experts attend and co-faciliate with Bianca.

Group size is capped to 12 participants each meeting.
