Event description

This is a peer support group facilitated by Laid Off Calgary. Themes and guest co-facilitators change weekly.
At a glance schedule:

June 20 - with Mark Kalinowski (Credit Counselling Society)

Irregular income can come in many different forms including self-employment, contracting, casual work/hours, fluctuating hours, commissions, tips, and even bonuses. One of the major challenges with irregular income is not being able to predict income which makes budgeting very difficult.

It is very easy to get caught in a cycle of relying on credit to supplement lean months which can lead into a downward spiral of credit and debt. It also requires discipline to not overspend when the income is high.

The good news is that there are 3 different systems that you can try to help you manage irregular income so that you feel as though you’re in control and still have money for fun things. In the Irregular Income workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Determine which system will work for you;
  • Average your income and create a manageable household budget if you have been self-employed for over three years;
  • Create a holding account system so that you can weather the up’s and down’s of irregular income;
  • Create a good month budget and lean month budget;
  • Put money aside for taxes (if applicable);
  • Track your expenses so you know exactly where your money is going;
  • Plan and pay for irregular expenses like car maintenance, clothing and shoes, and pet bills even though your income fluctuates;
  • Create a paycheque plan to cover your fixed, cash/variable and savings expenses; and
  • Build your saving so that you can manage through the irregularity of your income.

You’ll be able to share your ideas and learn from others. We take a “grab and go” approach – grab an idea or two and go try it. All participants will walk away with ideas, resources and the full curriculum upon request.

Positively re-frame your experience of transition!

Laid Off Calgary meetings provide connection, support and empowerment during these economically challenged times.The ask of you is that you register in advance (here in eventbrite) and note that in the Laid Off Calgary meetings we respect confidentiality and time of each other, we are non-judgemental, we listen, and we share from our own experiences.

** Please note: the meeting starts on the advertised time, if you may be running more than 5 minutes late or may not be able to attend, please contact me in advance so we can reschedule you for another meeting **

The group meeting is 90 minutes. These meetings are open to first-timers and regulars.

We start by establishing some ground rules for the discussion then the facilitators invite conversation. There is a psychoeducational component (e.g. positive thinking strategies, learning about the stress response, finding resilience, grief process) with a key takeaway each week. With peer support participants can learn from others facing similar issues, feel more connected to others, pick up interpersonal skills and internalize lessons.

The facilitator ensures those who wish to talk can have a chance to share, or simply listen and hold space for others.

On some meetings we have special guests/industry experts attend and co-faciliate with Bianca.

Group size is capped to 12 participants each meeting.
