Event description
We invite you to discover how New Brunswick’s varied food webs relate to the conservation of our wildlife through stable isotope techniques!

About this Event

“Tuesday Talks with CPAWS-NB” is back for an exciting 2019-20 season! Get ready for a series of in-depth talks and discussions surrounding the conservation challenges and triumphs that we see here in New Brunswick! We hope you’ll join us for our first evening on October 22nd!

We are pleased to welcome Brian Hayden and his students from the Stable Isotopes in Nature Laboratory (SINLAB) at the University of New Brunswick. Brian is a Fellow of the Canadian Rivers Institute and a Research Associate at the UNB Biology Department where he leads the SINLAB. Brian researches aquatic food webs from arctic lakes to tropical mangrove swamps, examining how climate change and biological invasions are changing the shape and function of these diverse ecosystems.

On October 22nd, we invite you to discover how New Brunswick’s varied food webs relate to the conservation of our wildlife through Brian’s talk, “From Elements to Ecosystems: What Atomic Ratios Tell us About Wildlife in New Brunswick”. Brian will outline the technique of stable isotope ecology used by his research group to develop a better understanding of New Brunswick’s complex food webs. This overview will be followed by short presentations by students in the lab detailing their studies on the marine feeding of Atlantic salmon and North Atlantic right whales in addition to the overall food web structure within the Bay of Fundy.
