Event description
Join us on Giving Tuesday, December 3 at the VSO School of Music as we celebrate this international day of generosity.

About this Event

Our goal is to raise $10,000 to increase equitable access to arts-based experiences for all young people. Creativity is one of the most essential skills for our future and many kids are still not getting the opportunity to cultivate this skill at a young age. We believe that art in education is vital for creating the grounds for kids to unlock their creativity —and that is why we exist.

Join us on Giving Tuesday, December 3 at VSO School of Music to celebrate this international day of generosity. Connect with fellow creativity advocates, artists and influencers while enjoying casual conversations over wine and nibbles. Plus we are thrilled to welcome our special guest, Vanessa Richards, founder and choir leader of Van Van Song Society (formerly known as Woodwards Community Singers), who will be leading us through a very special and interactive evening that will encourage us to share our voices through song.

Not a singer? No problem. This event is designed for everyone.

Vanessa Richards is a master convener, gifted in the art of creating a space that will encourage you to explore what is possible when you are given the conditions to activate your creativity. This evening will be a chance for you to experience our mission in action.

Come with an open mind and leave with a full heart.

What is Giving Tuesday?

Giving Tuesday is a global movement for giving, taking place each year after Black Friday. The "Opening day of the giving season," it's a time when charities, companies and individuals join together and rally for favourite causes.

How does Giving Tuesday impact ArtStarts' mission?

Our goal is to raise $10,000 towards increasing equitable access to art-based experiences for all young people in schools. It's no secret that our young people today are facing a rapidly changing (and messy) world, which is increasing our collective need for essential skills like creativity now more than ever before.

What are the ways young people can learn to cultivate creativity? Through art-based learning.

Creativity is one of the most essential skills for the future and yet many kids still do not have the opportunity to cultivate this skill at a young age. Art-based learning is vital for creating the grounds for kids to unlock their creativity, and that is why we exist.

Join us and help bring creativity into schools across BC!

About Vanessa Richards

My name is Vanessa Richards and I believe in the power of people and creativity. I combine these two superpowers to help groups attain (and celebrate) their goals and missions effectively.

As an artist and facilitator, my professional experience is in music, performance, creative writing, arts education and public celebration. For more than 20 years I have been combining my passion for communities and culture into unique socially-engaged projects. Along the way I’ve learned much about creativity, collaboration and inspired leadership. I am the founder and choir leader of Van Van Song Society (formerly Woodward’s Community Singers) and director of Creative Together, song based facilitation. My literary, performance and social arts practise has received numerous grants and awards in the UK and Canada. In 2018, I accepted the City of Vancouver’s Mayor’s Achievement Award for my work in the realm of civic imagination and engagement.

ArtStarts acknowledges that we carry out our work on the lands of Indigenous nations throughout colonial British Columbia. Our office and the ArtStarts Gallery are located on the unceded, ancestral, and traditional territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and Sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples.
