Event description

Description

Mental illness indirectly affects all Canadians at some time through a family member, friend or colleague. According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, one in five Canadians will personally experience a mental health problem or illness this year. That’s about seven million of us.

Despite how common it is, mental illness continues to be met with widespread stigma: more than 60 per cent of people who identify as having a mental illness don’t reach out for help and stigma is one of the main reasons.

Change is possible, however, and we, at MAG, are taking a step towards reducing stigma with the Turning the Tables on Mental Illness event on January 16, 2019, from 9:30am to noon. This special event at 900 Bay Street in Toronto will feature a “living library” of MAG employees who will share personal stories of living with a mental illness or living with a loved-one with a mental illness. They will talk about how systemic discrimination around the issue hurts people working within the OPS. They will also discuss the matter of concealing mental illness, and when and why it can be helpful to disclose those conditions at work. Importantly, they will talk about resilience - the ability to bounce back from difficult circumstances such as losing a job, divorce or bereavement.

Mental illness is real but people can and do thrive with the right supports and assistance. Let’s be a part of the solution. Please join the discussion. Sign-up today.
