Description

Type Day in Providence

Hosted by Paul Shaw

Join the knowledgable (and affable) Paul Shaw for a day-long adventure in Providence, Rhode Island. After travelling by train to Providence, the day will begin with a lettering tour of downtown Providence which is rich in juicy lettering from the mid-19th century through the 1950s, including ghost signs, Victoriana, Art Deco, and Modernist sans serifs. Then we will have lunch at a local eatery. The day will conclude with a visit to the Providence Public Library to see material from its Updike Collection of typographia as well as items printed by The Merrymount Press. Daniel Berkeley Updike, proprietor of The Merrymount Press, was the author of Printing Types: A Study of Survivals (1922), a groundbreaking work of typographic history. The Updike Collection was founded upon material (e.g. type specimens) that he collected as part of his research. It includes many items not found in any other library or collection, such as a broadside specimen showing the typefaces of Isaac Moore. This is a special opportunity to indulge a love of letters and type.

Cost of transportation is included in the fee, but not lunch.
Tour co-sponsored by Legacy of Letters.
