Event description

Description

U School is an initiative from the University of Alberta’s Office of the Senate with the goal of connecting socially vulnerable and/or rural students in grade 4-9 to the possibilities of post secondary education. This year-long experience is integrated into participating student’s school year and includes a five day site visit to the University of Alberta. During the site visit, U School participants get to explore campus and meet the diverse group of people study and work there.

Without U School’s volunteer presenters, interviewees and mentors, the program would not be able to provide U School students with so many incredible opportunities to connect with the possibilities that await them should they choose to attend the U of A.

U School is looking for volunteer Classroom Mentors who are passionate about children, learning and are connected to the U of A (undergraduates, graduate students, post doctoral fellows, faculty, staff, Senator, Board members and alumni). Shifts are generally 2.5 hours from 9:30am-12:00pm and 12:00-2:30pm Monday to Friday. Volunteering multiple times during the same week with the same class allows Classroom Mentors to form deeper relationships with U School participants - this is strongly encouraged however not mandatory. We host concurrent classes in our Education North, Education South, and sometimes CCIS U School classrooms most weeks, so do check the full description of the shifts when you are signing up.

A Classroom Mentor’s role includes:

  • interacting with students in small groups
  • supporting students during small group activities
  • occasionally leading a small group
  • modelling and supporting students during journaling time
  • assisting in keeping students together when moving around campus
  • answering questions about your U of A and learning journey
  • modelling appropriate behaviour to students
  • responding to student’s journals at the end of the day

If you have any questions, comments, or have ideas about getting involved in another way please contact Mel at melania@ualberta.ca.

Please look over your personal schedule before signing up for shifts and select your volunteer dates and times carefully for shifts you know you can commit to.
