About this event

This workshop will take place live online, with a link sent to participants a week prior to the event date. Workshops are $99 (+GST) and run Monday to Friday, with a total of 7.5 instructional hours each. Please check out our other 7 workshops.

Workshop Description:

In our current times, writing about joy can seem trite, naïve, or indifferent. Yet joyful art may be what we and our readers need. Explore both how to write about joy and how to create a joyful writing practice. How can we write about love, beauty, or happiness with substance, not sentimentality? How can we create a satisfying arc and an authentic connection with readers? And how can we take on the difficult, emotional labour of writing with a spirit of pleasure and play? While we will focus on poetry and creative nonfiction, this workshop will not be limited to any particular genre.

Workshop Outcomes:

  • Read published work about joy, recognizing the choices made by writers and why they work.
  • Apply craft techniques to meaningful work on any topic.
  • Receive and apply feedback to short exercises assigned and shared in class.
  • Identify ways to bring joy into a writing practice.
