Description

Save the Date: UBC and BC Children’s Hospital Antimicrobial Resistance Symposium

March 1st, 2018
Location: The University of British Columbia, Vancouver Campus

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of today’s greatest long term national and international public health threats. New resistance mechanisms are emerging and spreading globally, threatening our ability to treat common infectious diseases, and leading to prolonged illnesses, higher rates of disability, and more deaths. The WHO has warned that without urgent, coordinated action, “[a] post-antibiotic era - in which common infections and minor injuries can kill – is a very real possibility for the 21st century.” Antimicrobial resistance disproportionately affects the world’s poorest populations, where access to medicines is limited and disease transmission rates are high.

Join the UBC Neglected Global Diseases Initiative and Center for International Child Health (BC Children’s Hospital) for the Antimicrobial Resistance Symposium on March 1st, 2018. Internationally acclaimed experts in antimicrobial resistance will address both the international context and our local BC and Canadian context. The symposium will also include a panel discussion with researchers from UBC and BC Children’s Hospital who are tackling this problem from different angles. Together, we will explore the various avenues that perpetuate resistance to antibiotics, while learning about possible solutions to this worldwide crisis.
