Background on Vancouver and British Columbia (BC)

BC has one of the highest ratios of clean technology companies to GDP in Canada, housing about one third of the nation’s clean tech companies (valued at approx. £7 billion). Major drivers for this clean tech concentration include policy and increased financing options. The City of Vancouver’s Greenest City Action Plan commits to doubling jobs in the green economy and making Vancouver the greenest city in the world by 2020. The City’s 2050 commitment to be powered by 100% renewable energy is a major driver for innovation in the built environment. Provincially, the government has established the $100 million BC Tech Fund and the $40 million Innovative Clean Energy Fund, both geared towards clean tech investment. With local investments from Microsoft, Amazon and Bill Gates, BC has seen an influx of capital from the US west coast. Companies and VCs like Chrysalix, Evok Innovations and the China Canada Clean Tech Innovation Centre represent a growing number of Vancouver-based investors.
