UMSU Student Leisure Guide Call For Facilitators & Proposals

UMSU is pleased to announce the Student Leisure Guide this Winter/Spring (March 4-April 18, 2021). Programs will offer a variety of free virtual activities for U of M students. Class ideas are: yoga, baking, oil & water painting, collaborative video-gaming, crafting, and more. Drawing on a wealth of Student Volunteer Facilitator expertise, the UMSU Leisure Guide works to offer diverse leisure and recreational opportunities for U of M students to learn a new skill, socialize and be a part of a community.

*Call For Facilitators & Proposals Open from: Jan 22 (9 am)-Feb 5 (4 pm), 2021.

We are currently:

1) Accepting proposals from those who have a skill to share and wish to facilitate a proposed activity.

2) Looking for individuals to build on specific, pre-determined programs that we would like to see take place in our next session. Please see below for more information.

Submission Criteria:

-Offers opportunities for meaningful and interactive leisure activities.

-Offers opportunities for relationship building between participants and/or between volunteers and participants.

-Fosters universality and participation.

-Relevant skills and facilitator experience required to deliver the program including life or work experience.

Facilitator Responsibilities:

-Design and facilitate (6-8) 60 minute weekly program sessions to run between March 4-April 18, 2021-or- Design and facilitate (2-4) 60 minute bi-weekly program sessions to run between March 4-April 18, 2021.

-Attend a 1-hour facilitator orientation session (or a shorter version for past facilitators).

-Create a safe and respectful environment for participants, and volunteers.

-Create an environment that encourages relationship building.

-Set-up/take-down supplies and equipment required for your program activities.

-Know, understand, and carry out emergency protocols as outlined in the facilitator training.

-Report weekly on program attendance, activity summaries, and accident reports.

Program Ideas – Winter/Spring 2021 (we are recruiting facilitators for the following activities):

1) Zumba:

We are looking for an energetic and outgoing Zumba instructor interested in designing and facilitating a lively, adapted Zumba class for students.

2) Collaborative Gamer Tournaments:

We would like to offer students the opportunity to play video games together collaboratively in a virtual social setting. We are looking for a facilitator who could design tournaments, and structured play for a group of gamers.

3) Baking 101 or Cooking 101:

We are looking for an individual with knowledge and passion for nutrition to design and provide an instructional/hands-on beginner cooking program for U of M Students. We would like this program to include nutrition information, budget planning, and kitchen safety considerations while participants are guided through the creation of a straight forward, budget friendly and nutritious meal options.

4) Yoga:

Looking for a facilitator with some yoga experience to facilitate a class which can be adapted to meet the various needs and wants of those attending virtually.

5) Virtual Games Night:

This class would involve virtual/interactive “board games” like, Pictionary, Trivia or something new every class. This class would offer building relationships as well as team work skills. NOTE: House Party could be an example of a virtual platform to use here.

6) Photography for beginners or Digital/Smartphone photography:

Teach photography basics. Exposure, handling/caring for a camera, common digital photography problems/questions answered.

7) Drawing or Painting 101:

Needing someone to teach basics of drawing or Painting! Ideas could range from talking about different brushes or pencils, to different paint mediums (ex: oil painting) or techniques (ex: pour painting).

8) Craft night:

From making Jewelry to taking something around home from shabby to chic. Looking for a natural crafter who can help others create something new every class.

9) Embroidery:

Here you will learn the basics of Embroidery. Possible class example could be tricks/tips & techniques to make easy embroidered sayings/designs.

10) Meditation:

This class is built for people who want to gain a general understanding of the mediation process.

11) Book Club:

Are you a book worm? Looking for someone who loves to read and is great at conversing about the novel at hand while engaging others to share their thoughts about the book too.

If you’re interested in proposing/facilitating your own UMSU Leisure Guide activity or taking on one of our suggested activities, please provide the following information outlined in these Eventbrite questions by the DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION: Feb 5, 2021 at 4 pm.

*Please note: if your proposal is selected, you may be required to provide an original Criminal Record Check as well as a Child and Adult Abuse Registry Check. We may require facilitators to sign waivers while we wait for checks to be completed.
