About this Event

“Unconventional Paths” is a documentary film that outlines the lives of former San Antonio Spurs player, Myck Kabongo, professional basketball player, Dane Smith, and international college player, Taysean Wilson-Nolan. The trio is a collective of Canadian athletes who grew up in poor and high-crime-rate neighbourhoods in Toronto, Ontario.

Beyond their socio-economic and demographic similarities, they share a common faith in Jesus Christ. Although it is true that the struggles within their communities and passion for the game of basketball lead them in a pursuit to play in the big sports leagues–which could potentially open up life-changing opportunities leading to financial gains–their interactions with Christ altered their paths and changed their end goal. On their journey to athletic success, Myck, Dane, and Taysean manage to sign with sports teams outside of their country. Along the way, they meet a Christian minister that introduces them to the untainted Gospel of Jesus Christ.

At the climax of their careers, each athlete faces an ultimate challenge that they’re not able to overcome on their own. In Myck’s case, it was his suspension at Texas University that prevented him from being drafted to the NBA. For Dane, it was his struggle to find consistent professional contracts. For Taysean, his severe injuries and lack of experience created a stumbling block in his college recruitment. When faced with disappointment, they were lead back to the heart of God and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
