Program Timeline and Content

9:00-10:00 Description and discussion of the interpersonal, cultural and traumatic roots of chronic addiction. A review of the ACE study (Adverse Childhood Experiences) study and how childhood trauma increases vulnerability to addiction.

10:00-10:30 Exploring other risk factors that increase vulnerability including intergenerational trauma, oppression, racism, addiction-related trauma, and stigma. PowerPoint, lecture, video clips and guest speakers.

10:30-10:45 Break

10:45-11:30 How addiction and trauma impact the brain.

11:30-12:15 Recovery--trauma informed interventions and addressing the roots of addiction. PowerPoint, lecture, video clips and open discussion.

Learning Objectives:


1. Participants can identify at least 2 risk factors regarding the development of an addictive disorder.

2. Participants can identify 3 trauma symptoms that may present in treatment sessions.

3. Participants can list 2 types or components of effective trauma or addiction treatment.






Presented by Hope Payson LCSW, LADC


Hope Payson, LCSW, LADC is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Alcohol and Drug Counselor who specializes in the treatment of addiction and trauma. She has over 30 years of experience working in a variety of community mental health settings. Hope currently coordinates a private psychotherapy practice in Winsted, CT and offers training and consultation services on issues related to addiction, recovery and trauma treatment. She is also the Producer of the documentary “Uprooting Addiction: Healing from the Group Up”



Guest Speaker: Daryl McGraw

The CEO of Formerly Inc, Connecticut’s first criminal justice reentry reform consultant agency. Daryl holds a bachelor’s degree in Human Services and a master’s degree in Organizational Management and is an Addictions Counselor, Recovery Support Specialist, and a Criminal Justice Professional who proudly identifies himself as a person in long term recovery from addiction.
