Event description

Description

This is part a series of Thursday night spring/summer gardening workshops held at our Share the Harvest Community Garden, which is located at the corner of 6th Street and Harmston Avenue, Courtenay.

Understanding Honey Bees: How You Can Support Bees in Your Garden and Community:

Join Wendi Gilson, owner of Black Horse Apiary, to learn all about honey bees and how they are central to bringing us much of the food that we eat. Bees are the cornerstone of any food security system yet we are losing them at an alarming rate. Come and learn all about these essential pollinators and how you can support them in your garden and community. Wendi will bring an enclosed hive of bees to show and will discuss initiatives that gardeners and communities have taken on to address the decline in bee populations.

Facilitator Bio:

Wendi Gilson is the owner of Black Horse Apiary, a small scale sustainable apiary that produces locally adapted disease-resistant bees and delicious honey, and offers a yearly apprentice BeeKeepers program. Wendi is also a member of the Canadian Association of professional apiculturists and works for the Ministry of Agriculture as the North Island Apiary Inspector. She has a passion for teaching about bees.
