Description


This workshop will focus on giving a better understanding of trauma and post-traumatic stress and challenges that immigrant and refugee families and youth face as they settle in Canada. Participants will learn simple strategies to work with newcomer families and to support their resilience and integration. Areas of discussion will include trauma, post-traumatic impact, resilience, and resources for immigrants.


Participants will:

  • Learn how trauma effects the nervous systems.

  • Gain skills to work with people affected by trauma.

  • Learn simple strategies to work cross-culturally with refugee families and youth.



About the Facilitator:

Karin Linschoten, MA, CCC, CCC-S, is the Clinical Director for counselling services at the Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers as well as team lead for psychotherapists at the Multicultural Health Brokers. She has been providing services for adults, youth and children from immigrant and refugee backgrounds since 2002. From 2013 - 2016 she was the representative for Canada on the International Council for Rehabilitation of Torture Victims.
