Event description

Description

To help prepare you for some of the cultural differences you may face in the UK workplace and getting into the UK workplace.

This session will be interactive and informal. It will give participants

an opportunity to find out more about the cultural norms of the UK workplace - looking at the following areas:

  • the cultural aspects of ‘selling yourself’ at the recruitment stage (behaviour at interview, getting feedback after an interview etc)
  • communication (direct and indirectness, body language, sense of humour, British English etc)
  • attitudes to hierarchy (terms of address, voicing your opinion/questions etc), time (breaks, holidays etc) and rules
  • socialising.

We will also signpost participants to sources of further learning about British culture.

In 2003 Jo and Kathryn Eade set up thinkingpeople, a cross-cultural training consultancy, with the aim of supporting individuals and organisations to build their cross-cultural competence. thinkingpeople work with a wide range of clients from refugee charities to major sporting organisations. thinkingpeople primarily work in the HE sector, however, working with students, professional services staff and academics on generic and culture-specific training.

Before starting thinkingpeople Jo worked for 2.5 years in Hubei, China in a teacher training college. She has an MA in Social Anthropology from SOAS and managed an international volunteer exchange programme for 18-25 year olds for VSO and the British Council.
