Description

Undressing Your Master Poet: Workshop with Yvonne Blomer

Yvonne Blomer is Victoria's Poet Laureate for a four-year term, 2015-2019. Selected by nomination, the Poet Laureate serves as Victoria's literary and cultural ambassador.

This is your opportunity to enter a poet’s work deeply, and let that work inspire your own poetry. In this five-week course, students will select a Master Poet to study, respond to, mimic and learn from. This will be an exploration where you will select and undress the lines, language and metaphors of your chosen poet. In 'Hologram: A Book of Glosas', P.K. Page writes that the glosa form was for her an opportunity to give homage to poets that she loved and who influenced her as a poet. In the poem, 'Taking off Emily Dickinson’s Clothes', Billy Collins writes “how there were sudden dashes whenever we spoke,” a poem where he takes risks, is cheeky but also pays homage to a great American poet. There will be readings, a short presentation and in-class writing as well as weekly homework.
