Event description
Let's combine Tools and Technology to grasp a fresh perspective on our surroundings and then laser etch that fresh perspective into wood!

About this Event

About me, and the reason I am doing this:

A while back, I took some courses to discover woodwork and laser cutting crafts. I am a member of the community called MakerLabs. This was established in the Mount Pleasant area of Vancouver and later moved to Strathcona when we needed more studio space. I've been at MakerLabs for about 5 years now.

I have done some vector illustration and used laser cutters to etch those illustrations onto reclaimed wood. I like the idea of a sustainable craft like that, and I think that laser cutting is something absolutely anyone can get into. My vision is to show you just how much potential these tools can have, and hopefully inspire you to get into the craft of laser cutting illustrations onto wood and many other materials!

What will we do?

First thing first, we will hang out and chat while we wait for the rest of our friends to arrive.

2. I'll show you our 26,000 square foot facility, the equipment that I use to do my work, and my own section of the building that I keep a lot of my tools and materials. I have a lot of belongings in this space and I use it when working on smaller projects, or simply to relax and watch Netflix.

It is sort of my home away from home. I've had a studio at MakerLabs for many years. It is a truly special part of the world — at least my world!

3. You'll see our tucked-away café/gastronomy lab, our common areas, some private spaces, our woodshop, metal shop, CNC area, co-working space, board room, flex spaces and even a science lab with a community of its own! (a community within a community)

4. (this one is optional) We will install Adobe Capture to our smartphones. It is super quick and easy to do this and very helpful if you do it before coming, but we can also use the app on my phone since all the vector files are going to the same laser cutter anyways.

5. We will explore what a vector file is and learn how to make vector textures from the world around us, anywhere that we are!

6. Together, it is finally time to MAKE. We will use the textures, traces, patterns or outlines we have created from our new angle of perspective.

7. We will find a small piece of wood that we can reclaim and give a new life to. One small enough to take home with you!

8. As a family, we will load these files onto the laser cutter.

9. The laser cutter will do its work and we will watch in amazement!

10. We will finish up by giving our work a quick sandpaper buff.

11. I will walk you to Gastown, through beautiful Railtown, where we will part ways — this isn't goodbye forever!

What is Provided?

You can briefly use my phone to take a picture of the pattern that you want to render into a vector drawing, we will load it onto the flash drive with my MacBook. Oh and of course, I will have (and operate on everyone's behalf) a Laser cutting CNC machine! Reclaimed wood will be provided for free.
