Description

The Integrated Concussion Research Program (ICRP) at the University of Calgary is pleased to invite you to a symposium on the latest concussion research, policy directives and effective clinical practices.

*Please note this event is accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC), the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) for CME credits of up to 5.0 hours, and the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association (CATA) for professional education credits.

The agenda for the day/evening includes:

  • Current information on the Canadian concussion research and policy activities including updates from Sport Canada, Parachute Canada and The Berlin Consensus Statement on Concussion and Sport

  • Latest scientific research regarding concussion prevention, diagnosis and prognosis, treatment and rehabilitation

  • Afternoon continuing medical education (CME) concussion workshops that will focus on:

  1. Acute assessment and management - Dr. Angelo Mikrogianakis (Alberta Children’s Hospital) and Dr. Katie MacGregor (Sport Medicine Centre, University of Calgary)

  2. New technology and concussion assessments - Dr. Brad Goodyear (University of Calgary) and Dr. Jeffrey Dunn (University of Calgary)

  3. Early concussion management and return to school, work, and sport strategies - Dr. Victor Lun (University of Calgary) and Dr. Constance Lebrun (University of Alberta)

  4. Chronic, complex concussion management - Dr. Chantel Debert (University of Calgary) and Dr. Michael Esser (Alberta Children’s Hospital)

  5. Effective practices for concussion rehabilitation - Dr. Kathryn Schneider (University of Calgary)

  6. Sports specific return to play considerations - Ms. Bonnie Sutter (University of Calgary) and Ms. Susan Massitti (Evidence Sport and Spinal/Rundle Physiotherapy)

A public panel discussion will take place the same evening and will have a panel of athletes and researchers talking about their personal experiences with concussions and thoughts on the future of concussion prevention, diagnosis and prognosis, treatment and rehabilitation in Canada. This event will run from 6:00pm-8:30pm. A separate registration link is required for the panel discussion and will be sent to you upon confirmation of the day symposium.




Upon completion of the day's activities, attendees will be able to:

  • Understand the concussion landscape in Canada and engage and stimulate progress in the clinical and research community.

  • Be better equipped to have meaningful and accurate conversations with patients and families regarding concussions based on current research.

  • Integrate new practices into their clinical activities that are based on current, field leading research.

  • Share new ideas, novel thinking and research with colleagues, associates and acquaintances.

Leading concussion clinicians, scientists, researchers and policy leaders from across Canada will be participating and presenting at this symposium.

A special reduced rate is available for students.
