The cost of utilities can be one of the largest budgets under the control of many organizations.  Not only are utilities a cost burden, the emissions associated with them form an increasing corporate risk and typically comprise the major greenhouse gas emissions component for that organization. Accounting for and making efforts to bring utility consumption down makes perfect business sense.  Further, it’s typical that a poorly performing building from an energy perspective is likely one experiencing poor comfort, indoor air quality and livability that is not optimal for your tenants or staff.

This one-day course is based on the energy management planning principles of ISO 50001 and the broader energy management process.  We will follow ISO 50001’s main premise of a process from development of an energy policy through energy management planning to implementation, measurement and verification. We will provide owners, managers, consultants and other building professionals a roadmap to assess utility costs and consumption; how to develop retrofit programs; and detail the various methods employed to identify, implement, monitor and sustain conservation programs.

The course will cover the following key components:

  • Imperatives for energy management
  • The ISO 50001 and energy management process from policy to sustaining savings
  • Utility baseline development and benchmarking
  • Energy auditing, feasibility studies and design engineering
  • Implementation options
  • Key retrofit opportunities (detailed for non-technically minded people)
  • Managing retrofit construction
  • Measurement and verification of savings
  • Sustaining performance over time
  • Human impacts of the retrofit process

A Certificate of Completion will be provided at the end of this course.
