Tuesday, April 11, 2023 4:30-6:30pm Terminal City Club

The American Chamber of Commerce in Canada - Pacific Chapter, along with lead sponsor, Miller Thomson, presents the first event of our State of America Series 2023.

The US political climate is as volatile as ever with parties becoming entrenched and the citizens divided. The Republican Party has seen major shifts in control and the rise of the more right wing factions. The Democrats too have more vocal and demanding subsets in their party. Democracy and government institutions are being questioned and tested by large segments of the population. Capitalism, free speech, and corporations are all being questioned. Hear from our experts about where America stands today in context and what it means for the future of their democracy and society.

Meet and hear panelists:

  • Richard Johnston, Canada Research Chair in Public Opinion, Elections, and Representation, Department of Political Science, UBC and an expert on the structural foundations of the US party system.
  • Paul Quirk, The Phil Lind Chair in US Politics and Representation with speciality in interest groups, congressional politics, and public policy. PhD Harvard.
  • Reka Juhász, Assistant Professor, UBC and a specialist in industrial policy. PhD LSE
  • Werner Antweiler, Associate Professor, Sauder School with expertise in energy economics, environmental economics, and international trade. PhD Toronto.

Agenda:

  • 4:30pm: Registration, finger foods/drinks, and networking
  • 5:00pm: Panel Discussion
  • 5:45pm: Q&A
  • 6:00pm: Networking and open discussion
