Description

Bring your own bicycle and tour three urban beekeeping projects in downtown Edmonton. On this tour, you'll get to meet the beekeepers, business owners, and advocates intersted in building food security in your city. While on this tour, recieve direction from the City of Edmonton's bike street team on how to use the downtown bike network. Helmets are mandatory for children under 18 years of age. Each participant receives a sweet treat to take home. Read on to learn more about where we'll stop:

Fairmont Hotel MacDonald

Fairmont Hotel Macdonald a four diamond luxury hotel, and top wedding destination, is situated in the heart of downtown Edmonton. This iconic property has been the setting of the city’s finest events and recognizable fixture of Edmonton’s skyline since July 5th, 1915. Standing high on the bank overlooking the largest urban parkway in North America, The North Saskatchewan River Valley, Fairmont Hotel Macdonald's charm and classic elegance have made us Edmonton's place for every occasion, whether it be a vacation or business trip. You'll meet the beekeepers who take care of the outdoor beehives.

MacEwan University

Edmonton's downtown university has several sweet sustainability features to enjoy. On this tour, you'll stop at buliding 5 to meet the beekeeper and learn more about the 6 rooftop Flow Hives. Find out more about bee hotels, the importance of wild pollinators, and how to get involved with sustainability on and off campus.

Shaw Conference Centre

Recognized as one of North America's top five performing venues, everything we do is dedicated towards pushing the limits of providing the very best experience a planner or guest has ever had, anywhere. We do this by hiring the world’s best employees. From housekeepers, event and client services staff to chefs and sales managers, our people are what makes the Shaw Conference Centre a preferred destination for nearly 650 meetings, conventions and events, and 500,000 guests annually.

Urban Beekeeping

Our property features one hive with 8,000 bees which grows to approximately 100,000 bees each summer, allowing us to harvest more than 90 pounds of honey. This signature honey, with its unique flavour and colour, is used in our kitchen to serve our guests, and contains a minty undertone attributed to the cat mint planted through our sustainable permaculture.

Please direct all inquiries to sustainability@macewan.ca.

Tour details will be emailed to guests in advance of the event. Ticket sales close at noon on September 24.
