Diwali (dee-vah-li) also known as Deepavali (dee-pah-vuh-li) or the Festival of Lights is a five-day celebration of good triumphing over evil. It is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Newar Buddhists around the world.
For Hindus, it marks the start of a new year and celebrates epic tales of victory in the ancient Sanskrit epic, Ramayana. For Sikhs, Diwali is about honouring the day that Guru Hargobind Ji, the sixth Sikh Guru, was freed from imprisonment. For Jains, Diwali celebrates Lord Mahivara’s attainment of nirvana (spiritual enlightenment). Buddhists celebrate it as the day Hindu Emperor Ashoka converted to Buddhism.
