Event description

Description

Please note: This workshop format will be two consecutive mornings at SFU Harbour Centre on Wednesday Jun 13 and Thursday June 14.

This masterclass is for intermediate to senior user experience professionals who want to improve their interview practice. Your facilitator is master interviewer Lorraine Chisholm, who will guide you to conduct more productive user interviews through skillful questioning and listening techniques. We will explore approaches that elicit meaningful stories and deliver impactful insights.

In this workshop we will:

  • Learn to develop, revise and iterate on a field guide that supports and clarifies your research questions.
  • Understand the art of the interview: research mindset, establishing rapport, eliciting stories, following threads, digging deeper, and clarifying insights.
  • Practice interviewing, observing, debriefing your interviews, and giving critique.
  • Extend your interview techniques using props and activities that allow you to map complex processes with individuals or groups.

The course will be a lively mix of theory and practice, with hands-on activities that challenge you to think on your feet. It will be conducted over 2 mornings to allow you to better integrate the skills and ideas, while maintaining a fast-paced, dynamic learning environment.

After this course you’ll have effective tools and approaches to:

  • Steer an in-depth interview with questions that align to your research goals, and that allow you to explore uncharted territory.
  • Get “into the zone” as an interviewer and develop rapport, trust and empathy.
  • Draw out detail, stories and emotional content that inform your insights and lead to meaningful and actionable research results.
  • Work through your data as your project evolves to focus and deepen your investigations.
  • Express your research insights to influence clients and stakeholders.

Delicious breakfast items, snacks and refreshments are included.

Please note this a "devices off" workshop: please bring us your full focus and attention for the day -- it will be worth it!
