Event description

Description

Do you aspire to be part of a large choir on the Festival stage, receive direction from an incredibly talented choir conductor and be applauded! The 12th annual Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival invites individuals, professional, amateur, children, church and youth choirs, as well as everyone who loves to sing, to add their voice to Vancouver Sings One Song (VSOS), co-presented with the Canadian Music Centre. After all, Chicago sings Christmas carols to the animals at their zoo and so, Vancouver will sing to our cherry blossoms this Spring!

Kathryn Nicholson, current Musical Director of the dynamic vocal ensemble, Sound Eclectic, will take voices to new heights and give every participant a very special experience to remember! Participation is open to everyone - no experience is required. Audiences will also be invited to sing along from song sheets!

This massed choir will be conducted by well-known and wonderfully inspiring choral director, Kathryn Nicholson. Her dynamic vocal ensemble, Sound Eclectic, will be our Host Choir. The Festival Songbook launches our new original song, Cherry Blossoms For You & Me, composed by JUNO award-winning artist, Tom Landa and composer, Robin Layne. The repertoire also includes Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, haunting Navaho chant Now I Walk in Beauty, and Japanese folk song Sakura Sakura in honour of Japan’s gift of cherry trees to our city in celebration of international friendship. Choir conductors are encouraged to incorporate rehearsals of this repertoire into their schedules and then come together for the one massed choir rehearsal/performance.

We hope singers will be inspired to also pop-up to sing at VCBF feature events under cherry trees in full bloom in VanDusen Botanical Garden on the April 14/15 weekend and The Big Picnic Queen Elizabeth Park April 21st. When hundreds of voices come together under the canopies of cherry blossoms, we know Vancouver Sings One Song will bring much joy to singers and audiences alike.

Recordings and musical arrangements of all the songs in the Festival Songbook and the other performance opportunities will be available on our website (www.vcbf.ca) by then end of November. Audiences at all events will be invited to sing along under the inclusive and joyful direction of Kathryn Nicholson!
